Scenario
8
Recently a new learner joined the class. You have noticed that the
learner is struggling in class due to a disability (an emotional
trauma or depression). How would you address this situation?
First, I
would ask the student to come with me to discuss the situation in private. Then I would mention that I notice the
student seems to be showing some frustration in class and ask what it is that
we can do to help alleviate the situation. Patiently and carefully listen to what
the student is feeling. If a student needs someone to talk to, refer and link student
to any resources in the school or the community for counselling or other
services. If they are struggling in
class, pairing them up with another student who speaks the same language and is
willing to tutor would be of benefit to both students.
⭐⭐⭐
I would suggest to the student that when they
are starting to feel this way, to feel free to get up and step away for a
moment until they feel they are ready to return. Demonstrate and share some deep breathing techniques
they can use when they are starting to feel this way. If the student is struggling
with learning the material, then it would be a good idea to identify the student’s
strengths and abilities and adapt the work load to those strengths. Keep classroom
learning consistent and predictable so that the learner is aware and knows what
to expect.
⭐⭐⭐
It is
important to keep a trusting, safe and honest relationship with clients/students.
Having a warm and inviting classroom helps students to feel comfortable without
feeling judged.
